Community Journalism as a Tool for Change: Results of the “V.O.C.E.” Project
The Regional Community Development Center (CRDC) announces the completion of the project “V.O.C.E. – Voices of Community Members for Education.” Initiated in 2024, the project aimed to empower young people from communities in southern Moldova through civic education and community journalism. Within the project, 16 young community journalists were trained, and 28 articles were published, bringing community challenges and potential solutions to public attention.
The main objective of “V.O.C.E.” was to establish a network of young community journalists capable of identifying, documenting, and addressing issues within their communities. The project had a significant impact on promoting transparency and accountability of local public authorities and on increasing the involvement of young women in local decision-making processes.
Throughout the project, the young journalists participated in intensive training sessions where they learned investigative journalism techniques and received guidance from experienced mentors. They addressed essential topics for their communities, ranging from local infrastructure and environmental issues to accessibility for persons with disabilities. The published articles not only highlighted these challenges but also contributed to identifying concrete solutions, such as the creation of a centralized resource for persons with disabilities or the organization of awareness workshops on violence and sexual harassment.
“The ‘V.O.C.E.’ project demonstrated that when young women are supported and empowered, they can become strong voices within their communities. The published articles had a direct impact by bringing real citizens’ concerns to light and contributing to solutions. Through this project, we helped nurture not only journalists, but also leaders ready to take responsibility. We are confident that these young women will continue to positively influence the society they live in,” stated Irina Bejan, Project Coordinator.
The project generated tangible results in addressing important community issues. For example, as a result of an article published by one of the young journalists, a centralized resource for children and persons with disabilities was created in the municipality of Cahul—an important initiative that improves access to essential services.
Another key objective of the project was the creation of a collaborative network of young community journalists working alongside local authorities and civil society organizations. Through this network, the young journalists demonstrated their ability to take an active role in community life and contribute to solving local challenges. The project thus laid the foundations for an emerging community of young women who will continue to collaborate and drive positive change in their regions.
