New Equipment for the Sewing Hub: Continuing to Support Community Initiatives in Cahul
Sewing Hub, an initiative developed by a group of active women from the Cahul Community Center community, is entering a new stage. With the support of EcoVisio, A.O. Centrul Regional de Dezvoltare Comunitară received a grant to equip the group with new equipment that will be used for sewing, repair, reuse and textile upcycling activities.
For us, this support is a continuation of our efforts to support initiatives that emerge and grow within the community and to connect them with the resources and opportunities they need to move forward.
An initiative grown by women from the community
Sewing Hub operates within the Cahul Community Center, opened by A.O. “Laolaltă” with the support of UNHCR, a space that hosts and creates opportunities for various community initiatives.
A group of women has gradually formed around the sewing activities, meeting regularly, working together and sharing their experience. Some participants already know how to sew and voluntarily share their time and knowledge, while others join to learn.
Over time, Sewing Hub has been supported through various projects and programmes that made it possible to organise activities and gradually develop the group. Today, however, one of the most important results is that the initiative continues beyond these projects. Sewing Hub has reached a point where it can sustain its activities through the involvement, volunteer work and dedication of its own community.
The women continue to meet, learn from one another and keep the initiative active, while our role is to remain alongside them and contribute, wherever we can, by identifying opportunities, mobilising resources and creating new possibilities for development.
From the first piece of equipment to a better-equipped Sewing Hub
Our collaboration with EcoVisio in supporting this initiative did not start today.
Previously, through the E-Circular programme, we received support for developing textile reuse activities, including a sewing machine that was made available to the community and has been used regularly during Sewing Hub meetings.
Our experience so far has shown us that there is not only an interest in these activities, but also a community willing to voluntarily invest its time and energy in keeping them going. This is precisely why we continued to look for resources to support what the women are already building.
This autumn, A.O. Centrul Regional de Dezvoltare Comunitară received a new grant from EcoVisio specifically intended to equip the Sewing Hub.
With these resources, a new computerised sewing machine, ironing and finishing equipment, a press for attaching accessories and the related tools, as well as other equipment needed for sewing, repair and creative textile reuse activities were purchased.
The equipment is made available to the women who participate in and develop the Sewing Hub. It will allow several participants to work at the same time, experiment with new techniques and carry out a wider range of textile repairs and transformations.
A community that keeps the Sewing Hub moving
An important role in ensuring the continuity of this initiative is also played by our colleague Kirila Anastasia, coordinator of the Cahul Community Center. Anastasia stays close to the group, brings participants together, facilitates the meetings and supports them in learning from one another. Together with the women from the community, she has helped ensure that Sewing Hub does not remain simply an activity carried out within a project, but continues to exist and develop.
But what truly keeps Sewing Hub active is its community. The women come together, contribute their time and knowledge, support one another and transform clothes and textiles that might otherwise be thrown away. In this way, the circular economy becomes less of a concept and more of a simple, everyday practice.
Sewing Hub welcomes participants every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 at the Cahul Community Center. Participation is free of charge, and women who would like to learn, share their skills or simply become part of this community can contact us to join the working group.
For A.O. Centrul Regional de Dezvoltare Comunitară, this new equipment represents another step in the direction in which we want to work: identifying initiatives that already have people, energy and engagement around them, and contributing resources and opportunities that help them grow and become increasingly sustainable.
We thank EcoVisio for its continued support and for investing in an initiative that demonstrates in a very practical way what can happen when resources reach the hands of a community that knows how to use them.
We repair. We reuse. We learn from one another. And we support communities in taking their ideas further.
