MoveZone – Territory of an Active Life: the winning project of the “Solutions for the Community” Hackathon

Within the participatory budgeting Hackathon “Solutions for the Community”, held in Cahul, the winning project that will be implemented for the benefit of the local community has been selected.

“MoveZone – Territory of an Active Life” proposes transforming an old volleyball court into a modern and free multisport hub designed for activities such as volleyball, badminton, and pickleball. The space will be developed on the territory of “Dimitrie Cantemir” Theoretical High School in Cahul and will provide young people and community members with an accessible place for physical activity, social interaction, and leisure.

The hackathon was more than just an event — it was a collaborative and learning process that brought together refugees, migrants, and members of the local community, organized into mixed teams. Participants worked together to identify real community challenges and develop practical solutions in a participatory and hands-on format.

Throughout the activity, participants took part in interactive sessions focused on developing community projects — from identifying problems and shaping ideas to planning activities and building project budgets. This process significantly increased participants’ understanding and confidence in their ability to develop local initiatives.

As a result of this joint effort, three community projects were developed:

  • “Our Clean and Welcoming City” – installing waste bins in areas where they are lacking, in order to improve waste management and promote civic responsibility.
  • “Harmony with Nature – Unity of Generations” – organizing thematic weekend hikes for young people to encourage outdoor activities and intergenerational interaction.
  • “MoveZone – Territory of an Active Life” – the project selected for implementation due to its direct impact on promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

The winning project was selected through public voting, giving community members the opportunity to directly decide which initiatives best address local needs. This process highlighted the importance of civic participation and collaboration among different groups within the community.

This project is implemented with the financial support of the European Union, contracted by ICMPD through the Migration Partnership Facility. The content is the sole responsibility of A.O. Centrul Regional de Dezvoltare Comunitară and does not necessarily reflect the position of the European Union.
